Boca Raton Luxury Real Estate

For many, Boca Raton is a dream city. Boca Raton luxury real estate is comprised of gorgeous oceanside homes, Mediterranean-inspired condominiums, townhouses, and more. With five meandering miles of beach frontage, 756 acres of lush green parks and an average annual temperature of 74.7 degrees, it is no wonder why Boca Raton luxury real estate is sought after by so many people.

History of Boca Raton

The city of Boca Raton was listed on early eighteenth century maps as Boca Ratones, and was associated with an inlet in the Biscayne Bay area of Miami. During the nineteenth century, the name was erroneously moved north on several maps and applied to Lake Boca Raton, an inlet that was closed at the time. From that point on, the city name eventually changed and became, simply, Boca Raton.

Early on in its history, Boca Raton was the site of Addison Mizner’s Boca Raton Hotel. A highly visible, pink-colored hotel, the towering structure still stands on the Intracoastal Waterway today. Boca Raton’s Pearl City neighborhood was originally established to house the service personnel for the hotel. At that time, in 1904, Japanese farmers of the nearby Yamato Colony converted the land west of Boca Raton into pineapple plantations. By World War II, much of this land was confiscated and used as the site of a key training facility for B-29 bomber crews. Later, much of the airbase would be donated to become the grounds of present-day Florida Atlantic University. The remainder of the airbase is still used today by the Boca Raton Airport.

Traces of Japanese heritage and culture can still be seen in Boca Raton today. Two examples are the name of Yamato Road, located just north of the airport, and the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in northwest Boca Raton.

Boca Raton was also home to two amusement parks – Africa U.S.A., which was open from 1953 to 1961, and Ancient America, open from 1953 to 1959. Since their closing, the amusement parks have been converted into Boca Raton luxury real estate properties. Africa U.S.A. Park’s “Jeep Safari Train” is now the Camino Gardens subdivision that lies one mile west of the Boca Raton Hotel. Ancient America was built near an Indian burial mound, a mound that is still visible within the Sanctuary neighborhood on U.S. Route 1, near Yamato Road.

During the late 1960s, Boca Raton real estate extended to include the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). In 1965, IBM purchased several hundred acres of Boca Raton real estate just west of the CSX rail line, which is northwest of Florida Atlantic University. Construction of IBM’s main complex began in 1967 and continued for a few years. In 1987, IBM relocated its manufacturing arm to Raleigh, North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park. The rest of the IBM facilities were maintained in Boca Raton until 1996, when they were closed and sold to Blue Lake Real Estate. In turn, the Boca Raton real estate company sold it to the T-REX Management Consortium. Today, T-REX is noted as a highly successful, beautifully landscaped business and research park. Interestingly enough, IBM later returned to Boca Raton in 2001, and opened its current software development laboratory off the city’s Congress Avenue.
