Fort Lauderdale is a well-known city located in Florida’s Broward County. Commonly referred to as the “Venice of America” for its large and intricate canal system, Fort Lauderdale real estate is presently comprised of a population of around 186,000 residents. The population of the canal city is largely metropolitan, and cultural diversity is commonplace.
Fort Lauderdale real estate, particularly Fort Lauderdale luxury real estate, is one of Florida’s fastest growing markets. Fort Lauderdale is a principal city of the South Florida metropolitan area, which is home to more than five million people.
A City Snapshot
The city was named after a series of forts that were built by the United States during the Second Seminole War. However, official development of the city did not begin until 50 years after the forts were abandoned at the end of the conflict. Actually, three forts named “Fort Lauderdale” were constructed. The first was located at the fork of the New River; the second was at Tarpon Bend, in an area now known as Sailboat Bend neighborhood; and the third was near the site of the Bahia Mar Marina. The forts were named after Major William Lauderdale, the commander of the detachment of soldiers who built the first fort.
In addition to the Fort Lauderdale real estate market, the city’s tourism market continues to grow rapidly as well. There were an estimated 10.35 million visitors to the city in 2006 alone. Fort Lauderdale boasts more than 4,000 restaurants and 120 nightclubs. Additionally, Fort Lauderdale is a major yachting center, complete with 42,000 resident yachts and 100 marinas and boatyards. Fort Lauderdale luxury real estate is expanding as well, and includes lavish Florida estates and extravagant condominium communities.
Part of what makes Fort Lauderdale real estate so popular is the city’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, which includes seven miles of meandering beaches. Fort Lauderdale luxury real estate spans across the city’s extensive network of canals, and in total, more than 165 miles of waterways wind through the city limits.
